My grandma Ruth was born in San Francisco in a house on "A" Street. After the great earthquake of 1906 her father bought this house near Golden Gate Park. My grandma's sister remembers playing on the front stairs as a child. She remembers the Chinese laundry man and other household workers who would come and go. Her parents later moved to Los Angeles. Shortly after the Second World War my grandma's sister was visiting San Francisco and took this picture. My wife and I recently found the house. It looks pretty much as it did when it was built. This is fortunate, considering the rather dismal architectural fate of the houses on either side of it. August, 2004 |
